FAQs

You will find answers here to some of the questions you might have.

If there are any other questions you have, please get in touch and I will do my best to answer!

Is counselling confidential?

Yes! What you share with me in our sessions is completely confidential, with some exceptions. I will explain these in our first session together, but in short: if I am worried about serious harm to you or someone else, then I will need to speak to someone else (I will always try to discuss this with you first). There are also certain legal obligations I have around confidentiality.

How many counselling sessions will I need?

Honestly? I don’t know. Some people only need 4-6, some people need more. We will work together to decide how many you have – but ultimately, the decision is yours. I do both short term and long term work, and offer Single Session Therapy for people who have a single, focused issue they wish to explore in one session.

How long is a counselling session?

Sessions for over 18s are 50 minutes long, and under 18s are usually 45 minutes long.

What can you help me with?

Lots of things! Are you struggling with anxiety? We can work with that. Have you recently lost a loved one? We can explore bereavement and how you move forward (not on). Do you think you might be neurodivergent? Let’s talk that through and what that might mean for you. Struggling at work? We can explore what might be going on there.

There’s all sorts I can support you in explore, reflecting on and unpicking to work out and understand what’s going on. Feel free to contact me to arrange an initial chat to see if we’re a good fit.

What if I’m not sure what the problem is? Can I still come for counselling?

Of course! It’s not unusual for people to know that something is wrong, but not be sure exactly what. We can work together to explore what might be going on, and then reflect on what comes up together.

Are you neuro-affirming?

Yes! If you are neurodivergent, you need a therapist who will affirm this, and all that means for you. I am a neuroaffirming trained counsellor, and have undergone extra training to ensure I can adapt to meet your needs in the counselling room. As a late realising and diagnosed neurodivergent woman, I have lived experience of exploring this in therapy and working out what this means for me – and enjoy working with clients as they explore their own neurodivergence.

Our sessions can be a no-mask zone – stim, info-dump, sit in silence or change topics rapidly. You can be yourself, use fidget toys, take movement breaks and there’s no expectation of eye contact. Whatever you need.

What if I feel suicidal?

We will talk about this in our first session, or whenever it comes up, and how we will handle this together. If you feel suicidal between our sessions, please contact your nearest A&E department and ask to speak to someone from the crisis team, call 999 and/or speak to your GP. You could also call the Samaritans on 116 123 or email jo@samaritans.org.
